Vertical Dance by Compagnia dei Folli

Tombolo

Like threads, our lives intertwine and weave patterns.

Bobbin lace is a form of lace-making created through the skilled use of very fine thread wound around handcrafted wooden bobbins, which are interwoven following a pattern drawn on card and placed on a round cushion.

Like bobbins moved by invisible hands, the performers intertwine, weave and compose the imaginary threads of life. And just as lace becomes more precious through the interplay of empty and filled spaces, so the meaning of life unfolds between emptiness and fullness.

Like skeins of thread forgotten in a box, the performers come to life through the expert hands of the artisan-creator, who follows a predetermined design to create the weave. So too, it seems, are our lives.

But life holds surprises, and the performer-bobbins rebel against what has been predetermined, weaving threads and chance relationships through everyday life: sleeping, waking, loving, running, falling and getting back up, dying to make room for the new. There are no longer paths to follow; through each person’s freedom, the beauty of their own destiny is created.

The beauty of life runs through the patterns of threads that each of us weaves together with others, until we ourselves become light and a beacon.

In our imagination, dance reaches new places and vertical walls become stages for our vertical dance. Our dancers whirl through the air to tell of enchanted worlds, where stories carry us into imaginary places ruled by wonder and amazement. Dance everywhere, dance in vertical spaces.
