It is often said “fire of straw” To indicate something that lights up suddenly, shines intensely, and goes out quickly. In Maltignano, however, the straw told a different story.
The fire lit by Parole di Paglia – theater, circus and stories between wheat, bread and wonder It was created in a short time, but it managed to generate interest, participation, and a warmth that is destined to remain. Not the warmth of flames, but the warmth of the people who meet, listen to each other, laugh, dance, and share a common space.
At the heart of the festival is a small theater built with straw bales: a temporary arena, simple and welcoming, born from the earth and transformed into a place of entertainment and community.
A theatre born from the earth
Building a straw theater means starting with a poor and familiar material, linked to agricultural work, the rhythm of the seasons, and the memory of the countryside, in order to give it a new function.
The straw bales became walls, seats, and scenery. The audience did not just watch the events; they physically entered the project, sitting close to the artists and sharing a shared space, free from the distances that often separate the stage from the audience.
It is precisely this proximity that has created the most authentic atmosphere of the festival: warmth, human contact, listening and wonder. Every story, every note and every stage gesture seemed to be directed directly at the people present.
Parole di Paglia have shown that large structures are not necessary to build a meaningful cultural experience. Sometimes all that is needed is an open space, simple materials, good stories, and a community willing to stop and listen.

Bread, the land and popular music
One of the central moments of the festival was the meeting with Daniele Ciabattoni of Grano, which accompanied the audience in a narrative dedicated to bread, flour and the value of a work deeply linked to the territory.
Bread has emerged as what it truly represents: not just a food, but the result of a long history made of seeds, expectations, hands, knowledge handed down, and relationships. In a theater built with what remains of the grain after the harvest, talking about bread has taken on an even stronger meaning.
The music then collected and transformed these suggestions. Circo Diatonico He gave the audience a poetic concert, suspended between music, narration and imagination. The notes flowed through the Paglia Theatre with lightness, creating an intimate dialogue with the space and with the audience.
With the Aranderchitte, Instead, the listening turned into a celebration. The rhythm of the saltarello involved the audience, bringing different generations together in the dance. Popular music thus found its deeper function: not simply being performed, but being lived together.
The evening was also accompanied by the appearance of theMan of Straw from the Compagnia dei Folli, a figure on the stilts who transforms a symbol of rural tradition into a theatrical and poetic presence. Like the Scarecrow of the Wizard of Oz, He reminded us that what we are looking for may already be within us and that sometimes dreams really come true when we find the courage to follow them.
From parole di paglia to words of wonder
The festival found another particularly intense moment in the presentation of the book “The trees don’t run away” of Luca Capponi.
Through the narration of the trees, their roots and their relationship with the places, the straw words transformed into words of wonder. It was an invitation to observe what remains, to recognize the value of memory, and to listen to the stories preserved by the landscape.
The trees do not run away: they stay, resist, and change with time. A metaphor that, within a festival dedicated to rurality and communities, has taken on an even deeper meaning. Even territories need people willing to recognize them, tell about them, and take care of them.
Music that becomes theater
It was the musicians of the funambulist group who once again changed the rhythm of the evening. MicroBand.
With virtuosity, comedy and scenic invention, they demonstrated how a concert can transform into theater and how music can surprise even when it arises from seemingly familiar instruments, gestures and situations.
Their performance engaged the audience through an immediate and universal language. It was not necessary to know the music to be captivated: it was enough to follow the game, accept the unexpected, and rediscover the pleasure of wonder.
The wonder takes flight
When evening gave way to night, the Paglia Theatre came alive with new visions.
The Bright butterflies from the Compagnia dei Folli They traversed space as creatures born from darkness, bringing light, color, and poetry. Their large figures enveloped the audience in an atmosphere suspended between dream and reality.
With Swaylove, As the gaze rose even higher, the artists of the Compagnia dei Folli transformed the movement into dance and the sky into the stage space. The bodies, driven away from the ground and then gently brought back to the center, recounted the encounter, the distance, the trust, and the desire to be together again.
It was an image that captured the spirit of the festival: having roots in the earth without giving up the possibility of looking upward.

The creativity of children and’Art in the landscape
Parole di Paglia also involved the youngest through the afternoon workshops dedicated to building robots. straw dolls.
With simple materials, curious hands and a lot of imagination, every child created their own character, discovering that even what belongs to everyday agricultural life can become a game, a story and a creative work.
The installations of land art by Frida Art Academy They completed this dialogue between art and nature. The works, placed in the festival space, did not occupy the landscape, but listened to it and reinterpreted it, showing how creativity can emerge from natural materials and temporarily transform a place without erasing its identity.

What remains after Parole di Paglia
When a festival ends, the stage and equipment are dismantled, the artists leave, and the bales of straw return to their original material. But not everything disappears.
There remain the images, the words heard, the music, the children busy with construction, the audience dancing a saltarello, the artists suspended in the sky and the people sitting side by side.
What remains above all is the awareness that culture can also arise from a simple gesture: creating a space and inviting a community to enter it.
The fire of Parole di Paglia It has quickly ignited, but it has not gone out. It continues in the relationships born during the festival, in the memories of the audience, and in the desire to return to building together a place where the earth becomes the stage, music becomes encounter, and straw becomes wonder.
A special thanks goes to Municipality of Maltignano, At BIM Tronto and at Marche Region, To those who supported the realization of the project; to the artists, technicians, and all the people who collaborated; but above all to the public, who gave life to the Teatro di Paglia with their presence, their listening, and their enthusiasm.
Because a theater can be built with straw, but it is always the people who make it come alive.
